Why AVD, Windows 365, and Systech

I started in end-user computing at a time when “virtual desktop” usually meant something clunky, expensive and reserved for enterprises with a dedicated infrastructure team behind it. What kept me in it was watching Azure Virtual Desktop, and later Windows 365, make that same capability genuinely usable for businesses without a platform team of their own. That is the specialism I have built the last chunk of my career around, and it is the reason Microsoft recognised me as an MVP for Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365 specifically, rather than a broader Azure or Microsoft 365 category.

Writing the book

Writing Mastering Azure Virtual Desktop came out of the same instinct. Most of what I was seeing published on AVD at the time was either vendor marketing or documentation that assumed you had already made every decision correctly. I wanted a book that walked through the decisions themselves: licensing, sizing, image management, autoscaling, the things that actually determine whether a rollout is still stable six months in. Packt published it across two editions, the second brought up to date as the platform, and Windows 365 alongside it, both moved on.

Chartered Fellowship, and founding Systech

Being made a Chartered Fellow of the BCS, the Chartered Institute for IT, sits alongside that the same way: it is a peer-assessed recognition of experience and contribution to the profession, not a vendor badge. I founded Systech IT Solutions in 2013 on the same premise the book and the MVP work both come back to, that most businesses do not need enterprise complexity to get enterprise-grade outcomes. They need someone who has actually done the specific thing they are trying to do, and can tell them honestly what it takes.

What the work looks like now

That is still what most of my day-to-day work looks like, whether it is a Windows 365 migration, an Azure cost review, or helping a client work out whether Copilot is actually ready to switch on. The technology changes faster than most businesses can keep pace with; the value of nearly two decades in this specific corner of it is knowing which changes matter and which are just noise.
