Lists of the "best" IT support companies in Hull are a reasonable place to start, but they cannot tell you which one fits your business. This guide gives you the questions instead, a scorecard to use across any shortlist, and our own answers so you can score us the same way.

In short: Compare Hull IT support companies on evidence, not adjectives. Ask every provider the same questions: where the service desk is, who answers out of hours, how response is measured, which certifications you can verify on a register, how deep their Microsoft expertise goes, how on-site work is handled, what the term, notice and exit arrangements are, what the price includes, how onboarding runs, what reporting you get, and who in your sector will vouch for them. Score the answers side by side. Our own answers are in the table below.

We are an IT support company in the Hull area, so read this accordingly. We have written the questions to work as well against us as against anyone else, and we do not name or describe any other provider. The national version of this guide is how to choose an IT support company.

Why is a ranked list not enough?

Because the right provider depends on you. A 15-person professional services firm in the city centre and a 200-person manufacturer near the Humber need different things, and a single ranking cannot reflect both.

Most IT support websites also say similar things: responsive, proactive, UK-based, 24/7. Those words cost nothing to write. The questions below are the ones that take evidence to answer.

The questions to ask any Hull IT provider

Illustration of a provider shortlist checked question by question: service desk location, out-of-hours cover, how response is measured, verifiable certifications and exit terms, each marked as still to confirm.
A ranked list tells you who is confident. These questions tell you who fits.

Where is the service desk, and who works on it?

Ask where the people answering your calls are based, and whether they are employed by the provider or by a third party.

Who answers outside office hours?

"24/7" can mean an engineer who starts working on the problem, or a service that logs a ticket for the morning. Ask what happens at 2am on a Sunday, and whether out-of-hours cover is included or optional.

How is response measured, and how is it reported?

Ask for both response and resolution targets, how they are measured, and whether performance against them appears in a regular report.

Which certifications can you verify?

Ask for the certification body behind each certificate, then check it. Cyber Essentials has a public registry, and ISO certificates name the body that audited them.

How deep is the Microsoft expertise?

Most Hull businesses run on Microsoft 365. Ask who designs your identity, security and device management, and what recognition their people hold.

How is on-site work handled?

Ask how visits are arranged, what is included and what is charged, rather than for a travel time promise.

What are the contract term, notice period and exit terms?

Ask every provider, in writing, before you sign. Ask what happens to your data, admin access and documentation if you leave.

What does the price include?

Ask for the inclusion list and the exclusions list. Our IT support cost guide for Hull shows how to compare two quotes line by line.

How does onboarding run, and what reporting follows?

Ask to see an example onboarding plan and an example monthly report before you sign.

Who can vouch for you in our sector?

Ask for case studies or references from businesses similar to yours in size and sector.

"A provider worth shortlisting will answer every one of these questions plainly before you sign. Including us."

How does Systech answer those questions?

Here are our own answers, using what we already publish. Where the honest answer is "agreed in your service schedule" or "on the call", the table says so.

QuestionSystech's answer
Where is the service desk?100% UK-based service desk. Our office is at Brough Business Centre, HU15 1YU, about ten miles west of Hull, and our engineers are based across Yorkshire and the UK.
Who answers out of hours?Office-hours support suits most businesses. 24/7 support is available as an option, priced on the coverage window, with a UK-based engineer on call rather than an answering service.
How is response measured?Across Systech client engagements over the last 12 months, 98% of tickets met SLA and average response time was under 15 minutes. Your own targets are agreed in your service schedule.
Which certifications can be verified?ISO 27001 and ISO 9001, certified by NDC Certification Services Ltd, and Cyber Essentials with a registry link. All are on our certifications page. We help clients prepare for Cyber Essentials; we are not a certification body.
How deep is the Microsoft expertise?Microsoft cloud, identity and security is our core work. The team is led by Ryan Mangan, a Microsoft MVP for Azure Virtual Desktop and Windows 365.
How is on-site work handled? Most support is delivered remotely. On-site visits across East Yorkshire are arranged when the job needs someone in the room, and on-site work is scoped and quoted. We do not publish a travel time.
Term, notice and exit?Set out in writing before you sign. Ask us on the call.
Is pricing published?Yes. Managed IT is typically £25 to £40 per user per month for up to 50 users, and scoped above that. These are estimates, confirmed in a written quote after an assessment. See pricing.
What does onboarding look like?A written plan for your estate. A redacted example is on our walkthrough.
What reporting follows?A monthly service report, with an example on the walkthrough, and regular service reviews.
References in our sector?Published case studies, and sector-specific examples on the call.

A scorecard to use across your shortlist

Copy these rows into a spreadsheet and score each provider from 0 to 2: 0 for no answer, 1 for a vague answer, 2 for a specific answer with evidence.

CriterionWhat a strong answer looks like
Service desk locationNamed country and team, employed by the provider
Out-of-hours coverClear on who answers, and whether it is included or optional
Response measurementResponse and resolution targets, reported regularly
CertificationsIssuing body named, verifiable on a register
Microsoft depthNamed people who design identity, security and devices
On-site policyClear on how visits are arranged and charged
Term, notice and exitStated in writing before signing, including data and admin access
Pricing transparencyInclusions and exclusions listed, comparable line by line
Onboarding planExample plan shown before signing
Reporting and reviewsExample report shown, review rhythm agreed
Sector referencesSimilar size and sector, willing to talk

The provider with the highest score is not automatically the right one, but a low score on term and exit, or on pricing transparency, is worth taking seriously.

Frequently asked

What is the best IT support company in Hull?

The best one is the one whose answers fit your business, and that changes with size, sector and how much you run on-premises. Rather than relying on a ranked list, put the same questions to every provider on your shortlist: where the service desk is, who answers out of hours, how response is measured, which certifications can be checked on a public register, how deep the Microsoft expertise goes, how on-site work is handled, what the term and exit arrangements are, and what the price includes. Score the answers side by side. Our own answers are published in this guide so you can score us too.

How can I check an IT company's certifications?

Ask which certification body issued each certificate and look it up. Cyber Essentials certificates can be checked on a public registry, and ISO certificates name the certification body that audited them. A logo on a website is not evidence on its own. Systech's certificates are listed with their issuing bodies and a registry link on our certifications page.

Should a Hull business use a local IT company?

Being nearby helps for physical work, such as cabling, hardware installs, office moves and face-to-face reviews, and it helps with Hull-specific issues such as connectivity on the local KCOM network. For most day-to-day support it matters less than who answers, how fast and how well. Judge proximity alongside the other questions, not instead of them.

What questions should I ask an IT support company in Hull before signing?

Ask what is inside the monthly price and what is billed on top, where the service desk is and who answers outside office hours, how response and resolution are measured and reported, which certifications can be verified, how on-site visits are arranged, what the onboarding plan looks like, and what the contract term, notice period and exit arrangements are. A provider worth shortlisting will answer all of these plainly before you sign.
